Oscar at the Inclusive Cycling Community Event, Spring Hall, Calderdale

Oscar is a Disabled asylum seeker, who has been living in Yorkshire for around a year. He spends his time volunteering at a local community centre, and is a room host there, assisting with children’s English sessions.

Oscar’s regular participation and support for his local community led to him having his first ever cycling experience at the Inclusive Cycling Community Event, held at Spring Hall Athletics Track, Calderdale.

Our staff were delighted to get Oscar on a cycle for the first time. He tried out a handcycle and completed several laps, pausing sometimes between laps then going back for another go. Oscar spoke to Everybody’s Cycling staff member Cathy and said how much he had enjoyed the event and that he would be attending more sessions. He said, “I am very happy, I’ve made some friends!”

Oscar was keen to continue his new found joy of cycling, and was able to access Get Cycling’s Pathways to Pedals free cycle loan scheme. Oscar borrowed a handcycle which allowed him to practise cycling, an experience that he really enjoyed and he also provided some constructive feedback on real life challenges around using a handcycle for day-to-day jobs. Overall, Oscar said that this gave him a real sense of achievement and something new to practise.

Oscar is just one of many people who have enjoyed attending one of our inclusive cycling events, and we look forward to seeing him again soon. Contact us if you would like to talk to us about other cycling activities we provide.

The Inclusive Cycle Community Event at Spring Hall that Oscar attended was made possible by a collaboration between Everybody’s Cycling , Calderdale CouncilActive Calderdale, and Ravenscliffe High School and Sports College, and kindly funded by West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
